Bonefish

SEASON: October – mid-June
DURATION: 3-7 Nights
GROUP SIZE: 2-8 Guests

Bairs Lodge (South Andros) is a bucket list tick for any well-traveled fly angler. Add to the fact that any saltwater angler who has ever chased Bonefish will tell you, that the Bahamas is the spiritual home of these speedsters. Bairs Lodge adds another level to the pursuit. Wet wading on hard sand flats makes the hunt that much sweeter.
Bairs Lodge (South Andros) is perfectly located within a 5-minutes boat ride of striking distance to the remote south and west-side fisheries, and the location provides some respite against the wind should it up. This makes it a perfect Bonefish destination for a weekend getaway, to spend a full week fishing, or to introduce family & friends to the sport.

Fishing at Bairs Lodge (South Andros)

Bair’s is on the east side of South Andros Island, Bahamas. A five-minute skiff run from the lodge north or south will get anglers to Deep or Little Creek to begin fishing. As a bonus, guests walk directly from the lodge onto the boats to begin each fishing day. This means long fishing days and countless opportunities at Bonefish.
Bairs Lodge has access to 120 square miles of flats, teeming with 4-6 pound Bonefish and also a section of sheltered creeks to keep you fishing should the wind kick up.

The Flats

Little Creek connects to the island’s West Side, which can be reached by flats skiff in about 45 minutes. The Creek is an undeveloped zone and protected by Andros’ West Side National Park. Don’t let the longer run deter you, as Little Creek definitely boasts some of South Andros’ largest Bonefish. It is not uncommon to get shots at Bonefish pushing the trophy 10-pound mark.

The southern flats, another fantastic option at Bairs Lodge, are home to some of the least-pressured Bonefish in the region. Grassy Creek is a 40-minute boat run from the lodge dock. Weather permitting you can ride on to Hawksbill Creek and as far as Cistern Point. Bonefish in huge numbers make this area famous.

Think endless wade-able flats, abundant schools, and few competing anglers.

We recommend 9ft, 7-8wt. rods. A 7wt rod will suffice in most conditions. However, the 8wt is preferred when a long cast is required, or when the wind dictates. To be successful at Bairs Lodge you’ll be making casts of 50 feet with a long leader and an unweighted fly.
It is imperative that you bring a great reel with a smooth drag. Bonefish will scream off into your backing and reels should have the capacity to hold a weight forward floating line and 150 yards of 20lb backing.
Weight-forward bonefishing lines should be paired off with fluorocarbon leaders.
